IDWP concept: PurAID® DRINKING WATER

In partnership with the local authorities, we developed a PurAID®-based independent kiosk system, the PurAID® DRINKING WATER as an Independent Drinking Water Provider (IDWP) Project to give healthy and safe drinking water for local communities.
The very first PurAID®-based IDWP project has been successfully launched in Assin Amoabin, Ghana, making life easier and healthier for thousands of residents of this rural community, especially women and children.

2.1 billion people worldwide cannot access healthy, clean drinking water. This affects the lives of the children who live in these areas. When there is no water in or near homes and it has to be collected from far away, the women and girls living there mostly pay for water with their time and lost opportunities. Walking miles to fetch water puts a disproportionate burden on women and children, especially girls, who are responsible for providing water for the family and who are deprived of schooling because of the time spent carrying water every day.

Ensuring safe, clean and drinkable groundwater supplies for communities across Africa and worldwide is a growing concern due to deteriorating groundwater quality, ageing infrastructure, increasing population growth and lack of adequate capital injection into the treatment sector. Due to the high risk of exposure to contamination in groundwater supplies, point-of-use (POU) water treatment is gaining global acceptance.

Community members in settlements where there is no piped water and boreholes are used as a water supply system, frequently complain of the poor taste and smell of the water. They have challenges using this borehole water for household activities such as washing clothes because the water does not lather easily with the water. 

Therefore, an innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable water solution was needed to ensure the population's right to potable water.  This motivated us to develop the PurAID® DRINKING WATER project as an Independent Drinking Water Provider concept. 

The Independent Drinking Water Provider Concept aims at:

  • Giving instant solutions for water-challenges
  • Encourage packaging-free drinking water consumption
  • Providing a system that is easy to install, relocate and provides residents with safe drinking water
  • Giving access to clean and sustainable borehole water supply to rural communities across Ghana
  • Establishing partnerships with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, community groups, research institutions and private sector entities
  • Contributing to public health by reducing waterborne diseases and health risks associated with contaminated groundwater.

In the heart of IDWP there is the PurAID® system, a sustainable and cost-effective, pallet-sized, mobile and modular water purification technology, ideal for supplying water to rural and isolated areas.  The solution - which is also acknowledged by the United Nations -  is based on economical and sustainable regenerable adsorbent filtration technology which allows for a circular approach in both production and operation.

The simple, modular, cost-effective, sustainable and low-power solution provided by the Independent Drinking Water Provider Concept in the field of groundwater treatment is a promising sustainable approach Ghana and Africa can adopt in meeting the SDGs goals.

 According to our plans, PurAID® DRINKING WATER is a solution for every community needing safe drinking water access.

Intro

Our first project in Ghana, the trial operation of our PurAID® modular, mobile, pallet-based water purification equipment installed in the settlement of Akim Wenchi, has been successfully completed. With the help of PurAID®, iron and manganese impurities, as well as disease-causing bacteria, are removed from the water of the public wells of the town of 12,000 inhabitants.
